Other FAQ's
Why am I getting wet?
The first question is are you feeling wet or just cold? If you are just cold it usually means that the outer fabric is wetting-out and is absorbing water. Often just washing and drying the jacket will solve this problem.
If you are getting wet inside the jacket there can be two reasons why - the most common is that the pores in the Aegis® membrane are blocked preventing perspiration from escaping from the garment. The vapours collect and condense then soak into your layer under your jacket causing you to feel wet. Often a good wash and dry to clean the outer fabric and the membrane will solve this problem.
Less commonly there may be minuscule holes in the membrane. Swazi AEGIS® fabrics are very waterproof and incredibly durable, however, like ALL fabrics they are not indestructible or bulletproof. They can be punctured by sharp objects like barbed wire or spiky vegetation and when the fabric is punctured it will leak. Mostly these tiny puncture holes are not visible to the human eye, but can be detected in our water testing lab. Our advice is be extremely careful of sharp objects - the general rule is if it can pierce the skin on the palm of your hand then it can also pierce the membrane in your garment.
If you are getting wet inside your jacket and a thorough wash has not improved the issue then send it in to us for testing. Our Customer Services team will let you know lickety-split what the issue may be.
What does waterproof mean?
Waterproof means exactly that - waterproof. A product is either waterproof or it isn't.
You can't make a product that is 'more waterproof'. You can however make a product that is 'more water resistant'. Water resistance is not water-proofness. Water resistance means that the product will resist water up to a point, then will begin to compromise.
Waterproof means that the product is waterproof - no water, no compromise. Swazi products are waterproof.
My gear has lost some of it's water repellency - what can I do?
The simplest way to restore DWR (Durable Water Repellency) is to tumble dry or iron your garment. DWR is the ability of water to bead up and roll off the outer fabric instead of being absorbed. It's an ultra thin treatment that changes the surface tension of the garment and can be easily restored by applying heat. Over time the DWR will require replacing due to flex, abrasion and dramatic temperature changes. Use a fluoropolymer based water repellent spray-on treatment available at outdoor shops. We recommend Grangers XT spray.
Do you have Swazi retail stores?
We do have a Swazi shop right next door to Swazi HQ here in Levin, New Zealand.
We only sell our products through the very best retailers - we're very selective about who we have representing our gear! Find out where your nearest store is by clicking on the Swazi Stockists section or click here for the quick link.
How do I clean my AEGIS® jacket?
It is very important to wash your AEGIS® outerwear regularly to maintain it's performance.
Before laundering, always consult your garment's care label to be completely sure.
Machine wash separately on warm (40°C) using liquid washing detergent, double rinse and spin. We recommend liquid washing detergent as they are less likely to leave a residue that will affect the Durable Water Repellent (DWR) finish.
Don't use bleach or fabric softener. Pre-wash stain removers can be used to treat stains on your garment. Treat stains as quickly as possible for best results. Ensure your garment is rinsed well after washing. Re-treat with DWR finish when required.
Tumble Dry on a warm setting (55°C) until dry. Heat from the tumble dryer helps to enhance the Durable Water Repellency on the surface of the outer fabric - as it is heat activated. Tumble drying is recommended, however, ironing on the lowest steam setting will achieve a similar result.
Dry cleaning is recommended for well used, dirty, sweaty and stained garments. Occasional dry cleaning won't harm the Aegis® membrane and thoroughly cleans your garment. Ask your dry cleaner to use clear solvent and to apply a fluoropolymer based water repellency treatment to the outer fabric.
