Insulation works by trapping warm air close to the body — using synthetic fill that performs even when damp, dries fast and packs down smaller than you'd expect. At the lighter end of the range, packable jackets and vests slot between a mid layer and outer layer when the temperature drops and a fleece alone isn't enough. At the heavier end, fully waterproofed options are substantial enough to serve as standalone outer layers on the coldest, wettest days going.
